Scotland legend Gavin Hastings has revealed that he is "disgusted" by the decision of Craig Joubert to award a penalty in the final minute of their 35-34 defeat against Australia.
Joubert appeared to penalise Josh Strauss for a deliberate knock-on, but replays proved indecisive as to whether he or Wallabies scrum-half Nick Phipps made contact with the ball.
However, Hastings is in no doubt as to the conduct of Joubert and suggested that the South African should have utilised the television match official before reaching a final decision.
He told BBC Sport: "If I see referee Craig Joubert again, I am going to tell him how disgusted I am. It was disgraceful that he ran straight off the pitch at the end like that.
"The referee is not expected to make the right decision all the time. That's what the TMO system is in place for.
"This is the quarter-final of a Rugby World Cup. This is the highest end of our sport and they have to get these decisions right."
Australia play Argentina in the last four, with the winners facing either New Zealand or South Africa in the final.
