England coach Stuart Lancaster admits that his time in charge of the national side could be over following the Red Rose's premature exit from the Rugby World Cup.

Stuart Lancaster has conceded that his future as England coach is completely out of his hands following the end of his side's Rugby World Cup campaign.

The Red Rose were eliminated from the competition last week in their 33-13 defeat to Australia, becoming the first host nation in the history of the tournament to fail to reach the knockout round.

However, England ended their campaign on a high note with a resounding 60-3 win over Uruguay as they scored 10 tries at the Etihad Stadium, but Lancaster has admitted that his side's premature exit from their home World Cup may have sealed his fate.

He told BBC Sport: "I think anyone in my position who has worked since December 2011 to this point would say it would be hard to walk away from but I understand it's a results business.

"It's not just what's in my mind; there's a lot of other people who are going to have a say but it has been a tough week and I just wanted to get it over with.

"It has been a tough week for the players and certainly the reaction of the crowd was a lift, I thought the crowd were brilliant tonight."

Lancaster has won 28 of his 46 matches in charge of England.
