Ireland and Ulster flanker Stephen Ferris is forced to retire due to an ankle injury.

Ireland and Ulster flanker Stephen Ferris has been forced to retire at the age of 28 due to an ankle injury.

Ferris, who won 65 caps for his country, suffered the problem in 2012 and has failed to make a full recovery.

His crowing achievement at international level was playing all five matches of Ireland's Grand Slam campaign during the 2009 Six Nations.

"It is every young rugby player's dream to represent their province and their country and I have been enormously privileged to have done both," Ferris is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"I have shared a pitch with so many talented players over the past nine years and I want to thank my teammates at Ulster and Ireland for the support that they have given me."

Ferris was part of the British and Irish Lions squad in 2009 for their tour of South Africa.
