Ireland's Jared Payne is eager to restore his centre partnership with Robbie Henshaw, who missed the country's opener due to injury, when Joe Schmidt's side play Romania.

Ireland centre Jared Payne has stated that he wants game time with Robbie Henshaw when Ireland take on Romania in their second Pool D fixture.

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt hopes to welcome Henshaw, who has only managed light jogging on his return from a hamstring injury, back to full training on Wednesday.

New Zealand-born Payne, 29, formed part of Ireland's first-choice centre partnership with Henshaw for Ireland's 2015 Six Nations triumph.

"It would be nice to get some time together with Robbie but whoever Joe picks, we've got to make sure that we get together, do our video work then build the combinations as best we can. And then hopefully come the game it's pretty seamless," Payne told reporters.

"Robbie was jogging around out there on Monday, so I think he was moving well enough. And we'll see what happens in the next few days I guess.

"Robbie's got a great passing game, very good feet and he's big and abrasive too. And in a few more years he's going to be one of the standout centres in world rugby."

Ireland, who sit on top of Pool D after a bonus-point victory over Canada, play Romania at Wembley on September 27.
