Report: Aviva Premiership salary cap expected to increase

Premiership Rugby are believed to be close to announcing an increased salary cap that intends to make sure England do not lose their best players to other leagues.

Premiership Rugby are reportedly optimistic that plans to raise the salary cap will be agreed this week.

The new regulations will allow Aviva Premiership teams a second overseas player, whose wages will fall outside a salary cap that will be increased to above the current £5m limit, according to BBC Sport.

It is hoped that that the financial boost will keep England's best players at home, with several of the country's biggest stars, including Steffon Armitage, having left for the more lucrative French league in recent years.

"The rise in the salary cap will help our clubs retain the best English players," Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty told reporters. "It is an essential part of our league and the strength of our system."

He added: "We currently have more than 70% of matchday squads qualified to play for England and we want to maintain this to ensure England is in great shape, not only for the 2015 World Cup but also for 2019 and beyond."

The changes are expected to be approved following a Wednesday meeting.
