Scotland hooker Dave Cherry has been ruled out for the remainder of the Rugby World Cup after suffering a freak injury at the team hotel.

The 32-year-old slipped on the hotel stairs and suffered a concussion earlier this week, meaning that he will now have to undergo the head injury protocols that have been put in place.

As a result, Cherry will play no further part in the tournament in France, with his Edinburgh teammate Stuart McInally taking his place in the squad.

"I'm hugely disappointed to be leaving the squad with concussion. I've loved my time in camp over the summer and gaining my first World Cup cap on Sunday against South Africa," Cherry said in a statement.

"I want to wish the team all the best for the remainder of the competition."

McInally had been on standby due to a concussion sustained by Ewan Ashman, although Ashman is now expected to be available for Scotland's next match against Tonga.

The 33-year-old McInally already has 49 caps for his country and has previously captained the side, as well as appearing at both the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups.

Gregor Townsend's side have a rest week this week before resuming their campaign against Tonga on September 24, when they will hope to get their first points on the board following their 18-3 defeat to defending champions South Africa in their tournament opener last weekend.

Scotland are also due to face Romania and Ireland in Pool B. body check tags ::
