France secured the gold medal in the men's 4x100m medley relay at the FINA World Championships after their US counterparts were disqualified.
The Americans came in first with a time of three minutes and 30.06 seconds, but officials penalised them after Kevin Cordes was adjudged to have jumped early by 0.04 seconds during his breaststroke leg.
"A relay disqualification is not a particular individual's fault," Cordes's teammate Nathan Adrian told reporters. "It's Team USA's fault and it falls on all of our shoulders.
"It will really motivate him. In the next couple of years we're going to have the fastest breaststroker in the world."
France's finish time of three minutes and 31.51 seconds won them the gold, with Australia taking silver and Japan going home with bronze.
