Heather Frederiksen thanks the crowd after her victory this evening.

S8 100m backstroke gold medal winner Heather Frederiksen has paid tribute to the crowd after her stunning victory this evening.

Frederiksen fought off a late challenge from American Jessica Long to win gold and has admitted that the crowd spurred her to the win.

"Did that really happen?" Frederiksen said. "I'm so so pleased, I really wanted that coming into this. I wasn't going to let it go.

"It means more than anyone ever knows. I was so hungry for it. I knew Jess was going to give me a good race out there and the crowd really brought me home.

"The crowd is absolutely amazing. I really cannot thank them enough. I had a feeling Jess was catching me as the crowd just kept getting louder and louder."

Frederiksen eventually won by more than a second-and-a-half.
