Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte have ensured passage into the men's 200m individual medley semi-finals at the Olympic Games.
Phelps led at the halfway stage of his heat following a strong backstroke length, but slipped behind Japan's Kosuke Hagino at the death to finish in 1:58.24.
Lochte took a different tactic, biding his time in the early stages before hammering the breaststroke and freestyle length to come in first.
Lochte's time of 1:58.03 sent him through as the second-fastest qualifier, behind Hungary's Laszlo Cseh.
There was good news for Team GB as James Goddard and Joe Robuck both booked their places in the semis. Only Cseh was quicker than Goddard in heat three.
Robuck edged through to the last 16 in 17th place overall with a time of 2:00.04.
