Michael Phelps missed out on the chance to claim his 23rd Olympic gold tonight, being forced to settle for silver in a highly-competitive 100m butterfly final.
Singapore's Joseph Schooling took the gold with a time of 50.39s, smashing Phelps's Olympic record time in the process.
Having started slow off the block, Phelps was forced to play catchup in the final 50m and despite a spirited effort could not reduce the deficit on Schooling, finishing with a time of 51.14s.
In an unusual turn of events, Phelps was forced to share the silver spot on the podium with two other competitors - South Africa's Chad le Clos and Hungary's Laszlo Cseh - as they tied the time.
Phelps's Olympic medal haul now stands at 27 from four Games - 22 golds, three silvers and two bronzes.
