Team Wales star Jazz Carlin expresses her delight in setting a new Commonwealth record in the 800m freestyle, but admits that she held back due to tomorrow's final.

Wales star Jazz Carlin has set a new Commonwealth Games record in the 800m freestyle, but has claimed that she held back slightly in order to conserve energy for the final.

The 23-year-old, who won two medals at the Delhi Games in 2010, stormed out of the blocks to secure a time of 8:22.69, breaking the previous record of 8:24.62, which was set by Australia's Tracey Wickham in 1978.

"It really was a really great time for the morning," Carlin told Sports Mole. "I wanted to come in and have a good swim.

"Having two days off and watching everyone do really well - Team Wales and everyone in the pool as well, I really wanted to have a good swim, a strong swim this morning but obviously saving something for tomorrow night.

"This year, I've really been focusing on the 800m and the 400m freestyle. I've really shifted my training for the distance work, so I was really surprised with the best time in the 200m, but it really was just to get me into the meet. Obviously my main events are towards the end of the week, so I'm just really excited for the next couple of days now."

The Welsh swimmers, who have been given a six-medal target, have reached the podium three times in Glasgow so far.
