Liam Broady's run at the Hall of Fame Open came to a swift end as he was comfortably defeated in two sets by Australia's Jordan Thompson in the second round.

Broady had taken down Japan's Shintaro Mochizuki with ease in round one but proved no match for seventh seed Thompson, who needed just 73 minutes to prevail 6-2 6-2.

Thompson had already lost to two Britons in Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie at Surbiton and Queen's respectively this summer, but he overpowered Broady from the start, breaking in the first game before Broady got on the board at the second attempt, despite a pair of double faults.

However, Thompson - who hit five aces and lost just one point on serve throughout the first set - broke again in the fifth game before recording another two love holds in a dominant first set.

In an identical set of circumstances, Thompson once again broke Broady in the first and fifth games of the second to stroll into the quarter-finals, as Broady failed to bring up a single break point and posted a 37% second-serve win percentage.

Thompson will now take on Adrian Mannarino for a place in the semi-finals following the Frenchman's 6-3 6-4 victory over Rinky Hijikata.
