Ekaterina Makarova has reached the second round of the Australian Open with a routine success over An-Sophie Mestach.
The 10th seed broke the world number 102 on five occasions to run out a convincing 6-2 6-2 winner.
Makarova, a two-time quarter-finalist in Melbourne, controlled the opening set against the 20-year-old before sealing the lead in 31 minutes.
Former Australian Open junior winner Mestach needed a fast start to the second and although the Belgian immediately dropped her serve, she responded superbly to level the set.
However, Makarova struck again in the following game and this time, she remained in front before registering a comfortable win.
The Russian will now play Roberta Vinci or Bojana Jovanovski in the last 64 on Wednesday.
