Number 10 seed Ekaterina Makarova has secured her place in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with an emphatic victory over Julia Goerges.
The 26-year-old started the match strongly as she forced a break in the German's opening service game, and she produced a resolute display on her serve to immediately put the pressure on Goerges.
Makarova earned her second break at the perfect time to win the set 6-3 in 33 minutes as she overpowered her opponent.
The Russian was even more dominant in the second set as she kept up the constant pressure on the service game of the German by taking a 3-1 lead.
Makarova put herself in a match-winning position, but failed to serve out for victory as the 26-year-old showed resistance late in the game.
However, the number 10 seed came back in the next game to take the second set 6-2 and earn the match-winning break
The Russian will face either Yanina Wickmayer or Simona Halep in the quarter-finals of the competition.
