David Ferrer has been eliminated in the third round of the Cincinnati Open following a 6-2 6-4 loss against Russian Dmitry Tursunov on Thursday.
The experienced Spaniard struggled in the early stages of the match, with a break and hold for Tursunov allowing the Russian to take control of the opening set. Another break occurred at 1-3, before Tursunov eventually took the first set 6-2.
The decisive moment in the second - and what proved to be final - set occurred in the opening game, with a break of serve for Tursunov moving the Russian into a 1-0 lead.
Ferrer did recover to hold his next four service games, but he could not break the Tursunov serve as he exited the competition in straight sets.
Tursunov will face Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the next round.
