Andy Murray is sorry about his performance despite beating Gyorgy Balazs in straight sets in their Davis Cup tie.

Andy Murray has apologised to fans after his straight-sets win against Gyorgy Balazs in the Davis Cup.

The Scot had recently reached the semi-finals of the US Open, and he told spectators that his schedule had left him feeling fatigued and unable to perform at his best.

Britain had gone into Sunday's matches with an unassailable 3-0 lead, but wins for Murray and Colin Fleming capped a victorious weekend at the Braehead Arena.

"I wanted to play and I'm sorry I didn't play my best. I'm really, really tired; it has been a long few months," Murray said. "I thought he played very well today and he made me do a lot of the running. I was hoping to reverse those roles today but he kept me on the run.

"I just think it's important for [Great Britain] to try to win as many matches as possible. We have done well in the last few ties and I just wanted to keep the momentum going so it was great to get the win today."

The 5-0 series whitewash confirmed the team's promotion to Europe/Africa Zone Group I.
