French Open: Day three highlights from Roland Garros

The story of the third day of action at Roland Garros.

World number one Naomi Osaka avoided a first-round exit by the skin of her teeth at the French Open after Anna Karolina Schmiedlova twice served for victory only to go down 0-6 7-6 (4) 6-1.

Defending champion Simona Halep was also taken to three sets by Ajla Tomljanovic while 40-year-old Ivo Karlovic beat 37-year-old Feliciano Lopez in the oldest singles match at Roland Garros in the Open era.

There were mixed fortunes for the British players, with Kyle Edmund needing only two games to complete a five-set win over Jeremy Chardy but Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie both going out, the latter after a very poor display against a French qualifier.

Tweet of the day

Edmund no revolutionary

Edmund caused a stir with his tennis as he finished off a five-set win over Jeremy Chardy, but the big question was what he thought of his Nike kit. "I wouldn't personally pick flowers," said Edmund in typically understated fashion.

Nike's range this tournament has been inspired by the French Revolution, so did Edmund know the story behind it? "Do you think I would know?" And was he curious to find out? "No."

Succinct Tomic

A press conference taking in 19 questions would normally last well over 10 minutes but not when the interviewee is Bernard Tomic. The Australian was in no mood to discuss his speedy defeat by Taylor Fritz in any depth.

He denied tanking despite trying to give away the final point but was happy to agree with his absent countryman Nick Kyrgios that the French Open "sucks".

Fallen seeds

Women: Anett Kontaveit (17)
Men: None

Who's up next?

After winning her first main-draw match at Roland Garros on Monday, Johanna Konta will attempt to make that two when she takes on American wild card Lauren Davis.

Rafael Nadal makes his first trip of the tournament to Court Suzanne Lenglen to face Yannick Maden while Roger Federer takes on another German outsider in Oscar Otte on Philippe Chatrier.

Home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also takes centre stage against seventh seed Kei Nishikori and, in the women's draw, second seed Karolina Pliskova and fourth seed Kiki Bertens both continue their campaigns.
