Fourth-seed Tomas Berdych has progressed through to the second round of the French Open courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka on Monday.
Berdych put on a professional display to cruise past the 19-year-old 6-0 7-5 6-3 on Court Suzanne Lenglen in Paris and took the opening set in less than 30 minutes.
The teenager gave a spirited response to going a set down to the Czech, but Berdych's class ultimately prevailed.
After the match, the 29-year-old said that he was taking a pragmatic approach to the tournament having booked his place in the next round.
He told reporters: "There are still a lot of places to improve which is good. It is always good to have the first one down and now I'll just keep focusing on my next opponent."
Berdych could meet compatriot Radek Stepanek in the next round.
