Stanislas Wawrinka becomes a high-profile casualty of the French Open first round courtesy of a shock 6-4 5-7 6-2 6-0 defeat to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Stanislas Wawrinka has become a high-profile casualty of the French Open first round courtesy of a 6-4 5-7 6-2 6-0 loss to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez this evening.

It was Wawrinka who got the first break of the match as he moved into a 3-1 lead in the opening set, only to lose back-to-back service games of his own to hand Garcia-Lopez the initiative.

The Spaniard made no mistake in taking advantage of the situation, preventing Wawrinka from having another break point as he won the set 6-4.

Wawrinka again moved into an early lead in the second set but once more allowed the world number 38 back into it as he was broken by a love game to make it 4-3.

However, the Swiss number one recorded his second break of the set in the final game to restore parity with his spirited opponent.

Garcia-Lopez refused to be denied, however, and he began the third set by breaking the world number three in the very first game to regain the initiative.

He survived a break point in the next game before taking complete control with another break of serve in the seventh game, eventually clinching the set 6-2.

A stunned Wawrinka was powerless to resist as Garcia-Lopez dominated the fourth and final set, losing just three points on his own serve and breaking his opponent three times to take it 6-0 and complete the surprise victory.

Garcia-Lopez will now face Adrian Mannarino in the second round.
