Bethanie Mattek-Sands has progressed to the third round of the French Open with a shock three-sets win over Li Na in Paris.
The number six seed enjoyed the better start to the match, taking the opening four games. Mattek-Sands levelled the score at 4-4, but Li made a crucial break at 5-5 before holding her serve to take the first set 7-5.
The American fought back in the second set, taking the first three games. Despite Li reducing the deficit to 4-2, Mattek-Sands served out the set 6-3.
Mattek-Sands dominated the third set, breaking three times to race 5-0 ahead. Li claimed the next two games but the world number 67 held her serve to claim the deciding set 6-2.
She will face Argentinian Paula Ormaechea in the third round.
