Fabio Fognini is out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells after a straight-sets defeat to Adrian Mannarino.
The Frenchman staved off five break points in the opening set and notched up five aces to force a tie-break.
Fognini dug in in the breaker, but was eventually beaten 10-8 to fall one set behind.
The Italian, ranked 22 in the world, did finally manage to break the Mannarino serve in the second, but was himself broken twice as his opponent wrapped up the set 6-3 to secure passage to round three.
Mannarino will next meet the winner of the match between Ernests Gulbis and Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
