Roger Federer has been beaten 1-6 6-3 7-6(6) in the second round of the Italian Open by Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in just over two hours of tennis.
The Swiss took the first set 6-1 in just 26 minutes, twice breaking his opponent at 1-2 and 1-4 before serving for the opener in style.
Chardy responded in the second, however, and secured a break of his own at 1-2 to move ahead. Federer had two break points of his own at 4-3, but Chardy held on before serving it out to move level.
The third set was just as tight, with both securing breaks early on to leave the score level at 4-4.
It took a tie-break to separate the two, with Chardy coming out on top with a score of 8-6 after five breaks of serve.
