Former US Open champion Andy Roddick announces that he is to retire following the conclusion of the ongoing tournament at Flushing Meadows.

American Andy Roddick has confirmed that the ongoing US Open will be his last tournament as a professional tennis player.

The one-time winner of the event at Flushing Meadows made the announcement this evening on what is his 30th birthday.

"For whatever my faults have been, I've never done anything half way," he told a press conference. "I don't want to disrespect the game by coasting home.

"These guys have gotten really, really, really good and I'm not sure with compromised health that I can do what I want."

Roddick went on to admit that he made his mind up following his exit from Wimbledon at the hands of David Ferrer earlier this year.

"Walking off at Wimbledon I felt like I knew. I couldn't imagine myself being there another year," he added.

The three-time Wimbledon finalist is due to face Australian Bernard Tomic on the Arthur Ashe Court tomorrow night.

Roddick hit the world number one spot for a time back in November 2003.
