British number one Johanna Konta has bowed out of the Madrid Open after being forced to withdraw from her match with Caroline Garcia.
Konta was trailing 6-4 2-1 when she decided to bring an abrupt halt to the opening-round contest in Spain and she will be joined on the plane home by both Heather Watson and Laura Robson.
Watson had suffered defeat in the final qualifying round on Saturday but she was handed a tie against Daria Gavrilova after being given a lucky-loser spot.
However, her reprieve proved short-lived as she dropped serve four times on the way to a 6-4 7-5 defeat to the world number 39.
Robson had used her protected ranking position to enter the tournament but she was handed arguably the toughest draw of the tournament against in-form Victoria Azarenka.
The left-hander battled hard against the world number five but she only took one of her nine break-point chances and fell to a 6-4 6-2 defeat.
