Former US Open semi-finalist Gertrude Moran has died at the age of 89.
The American, who earned the nickname "Gorgeous Gussie", caused a media storm during Wimbledon in 1949 when she wore a tennis dress which revealed her lace-trimmed knickers.
After being refused permission by tournament officials to wear a coloured outfit, she ordered fashion designer Teddy Tinling to create an all-white garment that would stand out.
The All England Club committee accused Moran of bringing "vulgarity and sin into tennis".
She lost in the first round of the singles event, but reached the final of the women's doubles, where she and compatriot Patricia Todd were defeated by Louise Brough and Margaret Osborne DuPont.
Moran returned to Wimbledon the following year and reached the last eight in the singles event.
She died in her Los Angeles apartment on Wednesday, having recently returned home from a long stay in hospital, where she had been treated for colon cancer.
