James Ward defeated Attila Balazs in four sets 6-4 6-4 4-6 6-4 to get Britain off to a good start at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow.
World number four Andy Murray then took to the court to see off Sebo Kiss in straight sets 6-0 6-2 7-6 [7-3].
Britain will be promoted to Europe/Africa Group One if they win tomorrow's (Saturday) doubles matches.
