Andy Murray admits that he was far from his best after a tough, battling win over David Ferrer in the Miami Masters final.

Andy Murray has admitted that he had to dig deep to grind out a three-set victory over David Ferrer in the Miami Masters final.

Murray secured his second win at the Sony Open and moved to second in the world with a 2-6 6-4 6-7 win that saw him save a match point before battling back.

The Scot thinks that the spirit he showed is a sign of his will to win, but has targeted a stronger serve ahead of the upcoming clay-court season.

He said: "It was a strange match. I just managed to fight well at the end. They were tough conditions, it was very windy and extremely humid and hot.

"I served poorly today: that's something I'll need to do better in the clay court season. A couple of years ago, I would have lost that match.

"I was up a break three times, maybe four, in the third set and I let him back in with poor shots. Being 5-0 down in the first set wasn't the best way to start either. But in the third set I chased every ball down and made it as difficult as possible for him."

The 25-year-old will now take four days off ahead of preparations for the Monte Carlo Open in two weeks' time.
