Serena Williams is poised to make her return to the court after a year away.

The American will participate in the upcoming Aegon International in Eastbourne, marking her first competition appearance since she beat Vera Zvonareva to win her fourth Wimbledon title last summer.

Following her victory she was taken out of action by cutting her foot on broken glass. Her health problems persisted when she was diagnosed with a blood clot in her lung.

The 29-year-old began training again in April and is heading to Eastbourne ahead of Wimbledon later in the month.

“I am so excited to be healthy enough to compete again,” she told the New York Times. “These past 12 months have been extremely tough and character-building.

“I have so much to be grateful for. I’m thankful to my family, friend and fans for all of their support. Serena’s back!”
