Feliciano Lopez has reached the second round of the Paris Masters thanks to a tough three-set victory over Bernard Tomic.
The Spanish world number 29 broke early in what was a routine opening set before holding serve to close it out 6-4.
Lopez missed the chance to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second, allowing qualifier Tomic to force a tie-break which he won 7-4.
There was little to separate the two players in the decider, but it was Lopez who came through the tie-break 7-1 to advance.
He will now face seventh seed Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the third round of the tournament.
