Roberto Bautista Agut has moved into the second round of the Madrid Open thanks to a straight-sets victory over wildcard Marius Copil.
Both players exchanged blows during a tentative first set, but it was the 14th seed who found a break late on before claiming it 7-5.
It was a more routine affair for Bautista Agut in the second as he surged into a 4-1 lead on his way to winning the match 7-5 6-3.
Last year's semi-finalist will now play American Sam Querrey for a third-round spot.
