Liam Broady has reached the second round of a Masters Series event for the first time in his career with a straight-sets win over Bjorn Fratangelo at the Miami Open.
The British number four came through two qualifying matches to earn a place in the main draw, and the left-hander was able to come through by a 7-6 6-3 scoreline against a player who sits 60 places above him in the world rankings.
Fratangelo had the better of the opening set but Broady was able to come through a number of closely-fought service games before edging a tie-break 7-5.
The pair traded breaks of serve at the start of the second but while Broady dug deep to hold behind his own delivery, Fratangelo continued to make unforced errors on his own serve and two more breaks sealed a memorable victory for the Stockport-based player, who now meets Filip Krajinovic.
However, British compatriot Cameron Norrie lost out to big-serving Nicolas Jerry, with the Chilean hitting eight aces on the way to a 7-6 6-2 win.
In the women's draw, fellow debutant Katie Boulter suffered defeat in the opening round as Hsieh Su-wei prevailed by a 6-4 7-5 scoreline.
