Johanna Konta has thrashed Serena Williams for the loss of just one game in San Jose, inflicting the worst-ever defeat of the American's career.
The British number one has endured a disappointing 12 months, but just 53 minutes were required to register a 6-1 6-0 victory over the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
Williams won the first game of the contest, but that proved to be her only success as Konta remarkably put together a run of 12 straight games.
The world number 48 is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "I tried to put aside the incredible champion she is and just play the player of the day.
"She obviously wasn't playing at her best level, nowhere near it, and I really just tried to play the match on my terms. I felt I did better than her on the day but it's still a humbling experience to be out here with her."
Heather Watson is also through to the last 16 after edging out wildcard Claire Liu by a 6-4 3-6 6-4 scoreline.
