World number two Petra Kvitova's preparation for Wimbledon suffered a setback this afternoon when she lost 7-5 6-4 to Ekaterina Makarova in round one at the Eastbourne International.
Kvitova, who will head into SW19 as the defending champion, committed a number of unforced errors against a player who is 46 places below her in the rankings.
Today's loss is likely to be Kvitova's final match on grass before the start of Wimbledon, which is due to get underway next Monday.
She had been in good form heading into Eastbourne, having reached the semi-final of the French Open a fortnight ago.
