Nick Kyrgios beats Roger Federer 6-7 7-6 7-6 in a thrilling match to progress through to round four of the Madrid Open.

Roger Federer has crashed out of the Madrid Open at the third-round stage, having been defeated by Nick Kyrgios in a thrilling three-set affair.

The contest went all the way in each set, with the decider finally going the way of the 20-year-old in incredible circumstances.

Kyrgios was able to break his opponent's serve in the opening game of the contest, but world number two Federer levelled up at 5-5 to eventually take it to a tie-break.

It was the Swiss who prevailed 7-1 to get a real foothold overall, which he took into the second set by breaking Kyrgios early on.

However, things proved to be tight once again, with a tie once more required to separate the pair, but this time it was the Australian who held his nerve, despite throwing away a number of set points before eventually taking it to a decider.

Both players were able to hold in the third and final set, which proved to be just as tight and unpredictable as the two which preceded it.

Two losses of serve apiece left the tie-break delicately poised at 8-8, at which point Federer and Kygios had each failed to capitalise on match points.

Kyrgios finally booked his place in the next round by ending the fight of Federer, however, claiming a 14-12 victory in sudden death to progress.
