Andy Murray has failed to progress into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open after suffering a 6-3 6-2 defeat to Santiago Giraldo.
The Scotsman, who returned to action this week after a month out, struggled in the early stages of the first set on the clay court after losing his second service game.
The Wimbledon champion came close to breaking back instantly, but Giraldo was able to claim the point from an advantage to remain on top.
Murray was unable to create a decent break opportunity for himself and relinquished the first set, placing him on the back foot in Madrid.
The British number one went another break down in his second service game of the next set and once again failed to trouble his opponent, who remained composed on the court.
Giraldo added to Murray's woes by grabbing a second break, which allowed him to serve for the match and reach the final eight of the tournament.
