Top seed Serena Williams eased into the last 32 of the Mutua Madrid Open this afternoon thanks to a straight-sets victory in just over an hour against Peng Shuai.
The American lost just two points on her own serve in the first set as she broke Peng's twice en route to a 6-2 success in under half an hour.
It wasn't quite so easy in the second and Williams had to save two break points in the third game before she broke Peng's serve in the next.
That would be enough for the win as Williams claimed the set 6-3 to set up a second-round meeting against either 14th seed Carla Suarez-Navarro or fellow American Alison Riske.
