Maria Sharapova has reached the final eight of the Madrid Open following a 6-4 6-3 victory over Samantha Stosur in the third round.

Games went by the way of serve in the first set until Sharapova nabbed a crucial break point at the right time to take the set.

The Russian pro took the edge once again in the second set to earn the first break of serve.

However, Stosur responded immediately with four break points, but her momentum did not last long as Sharapova broke once again to push on and take the victory.
