Serena Williams booked her place in round three of the Madrid Masters thanks to a 6-2 7-5 victory over Lourdes Dominguez Lino this afternoon.
The opening set proved to be relatively straightforward for Williams, who broke her opponent on two occasions to open up an advantage.
It was a much closer contest during the second set, with both players holding their serves during the first 11 games.
However, when Dominguez Lino served to force a tie-break, she was broken to love by American Williams.
She will now take on either Maria Kirilenko or Klara Zakopalova in the next round.
