Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki has been knocked out of the Rome International in the opening round by Bojana Jovanovski, who recorded a 2-6 6-4 7-6 victory in the Italian capital this afternoon.
Two breaks of serve allowed the Dane to wrap up the first set in just under 40 minutes.
However, world number 44 Jovanovski responded positively in the second set and despite suffering with a leg injury, she was able to force a decider with one break of the Wozniacki serve.
It appeared that Wozniacki was going to ease to victory when she opened up a 4-1 advantage, but Jovanovski hit back by winning the next four games in succession.
She even had Wozniacki serving to stay in the match at 6-5, but the world number nine held out to ensure that a tie-breaker was needed to determine a winner.
Wozniacki too control early on and went 5-2 in front, but another response from the Serbian saw here win five points in a row to book her place in the next round. It was her first win since January.
