Vera Zvonovera is through to the third round of the China Open after a three-set battle with Klara Zakopalova in Beijing.
The Russian third seed capitalised on a break to win the first set 6-3 before the unseeded Czech fought back to secure the second set 6-4.
After Zvonareva shot to a 4-0 in the deciding set, her opponent managed to hold two service games before the match ended 6-3 4-6 6-2 after two hours and 12 minutes.
Zvonareva, who fell to Caroline Wozniacki in last year's final, will play Serbian Ana Ivanovic in the third round.
