Rafael Nadal suffered a shock Rogers Cup defeat at the hands of Ivan Dodig despite strong domination in the first set.
The Spaniard, who lost out in the Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic this summer, claimed the first set 6-1. However, the Croatian number 41 fought his way back to victory by taking the next two sets on tie-break, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/5).
Despite crashing out of the Barcelona Open to the world number two in the semi-finals earlier this year, Dodig was able to avenge his defeat with 19 aces.
The 26-year-old will progress to the next stage of the competition, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's and Richard Gasquet's respective victories mean that they too continue in the tournament.
