Richard Gasquet has beaten Florian Mayer by straight sets in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
The Frenchman, who was knocked out at the first stage in last year’s competition, dominated the opening set to take it 6-3. The German succeeded in holding serve twice in the second set but went on to lose the match 6-3 6-2 as Gasquet secured the final game 40-0.
The victory marks Gasquet’s third over Mayer, who has beaten the world number 11 once in previous meetings.
Gasquet goes on to face Thomaz Bellucci in the second round of the competition.
