British number one Johanna Konta has safely progressed into the second round of the Rogers Cup courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Shelby Rogers in Toronto.
The new world number 14 celebrated her career-high ranking with a straightforward 6-4 6-2 triumph, overcoming her American opponent in 82 minutes.
Coming off the back of winning her first WTA title, Konta broke early in the opening set to race into a 3-1 lead against Rogers.
The world number 52 saved a set point in the ninth game of the opener, but she never looked like breaking Konta and in the end the Brit took the set at the third time of asking.
Konta also drew first blood in the second set by breaking in the very first game, but this time it was a hold of serve that proved to be vital.
Just one of the first seven games went with serve, but in that period Konta broke Rogers four times while only losing twice on her own serve, allowing her to see out the match by finishing on a love game.
