British hopeful Heather Watson has defeated Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-7 7-6 to advance through to the third round of the Rogers Cup.
The 22-year-old made light work of Cibulkova in the first set, with the Slovakian pro losing two breaks of serve.
The second set looked to be heading the same way when Watson raced into a 4-0 lead, but the Australian Open runner-up pegged her back at 4-4 before taking the set to a tie-break.
Cibulkova found two breaks of serve early on to take command, and eventually prevailed 7-3 to level the match overall.
In what was a tightly-fought battle in Toronto, a tie-break was needed once more in the decider to separate the two. Watson's hopes looked to be over when she trailed 3-0, but she levelled the tie at 4-4 before taking the set 7-5 to book a meeting with Victoria Azarenka.
