Carla Suarez Navarro has booked her place in the second round of the Rogers Cup courtesy of a comfortable straight-sets win over Jamie Hampton in Toronto.
The Spaniard broke her American opponent twice in the early stages to race into a 4-0 lead, and there were three further breaks in a sloppy first set.
It was Suarez Navarro who managed to hold her nerve to serve out for the opener, which she won 6-4 despite being broken herself twice.
Hampton was again error-prone in the second set, but did manage to save four break points before Suarez Navarro won the seventh game against serve to close in on the match.
The 24-year-old went on to save two break points of her own on her way to wrapping up a 6-4 6-4 victory that sets up a potential meeting with Samantha Stosur in the next round.
