Feliciano Lopez has booked his spot in the third round of the Shanghai Masters after beating Dominic Thiem 6-7 7-6 6-3 on Wednesday.
A topsy-turvy first set saw both players drop their serve on one occasion, but it was 22-year-old Austrian Thiem that came through the tie-break 7-4 to claim the opener after just 49 minutes.
It was equally tight in the second as another tie-break occurred when neither dropped their serve, but this time it was the 34-year-old Spaniard that came through 8-6 to send the second-round match into a final set.
Both continued to serve well in Shanghai in the third, but one break at 2-3 proved costly for Thiem as Lopez held his next two service games to advance into the next round.
