Jamie Murray and Johanna Konta are expected to represent Team GB in the mixed doubles at the Rio Olympics, while Andy Murray and Heather Watson miss out.

Team GB have announced that Jamie Murray and Johanna Konta have been selected for the tennis mixed doubles at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The team have also nominated a pairing of Andy Murray and Heather Watson, but they are unlikely to play as they need two teams to drop out before the end of the first round.

The Murray brothers were knocked out in the first round of the doubles on Monday, but Andy remains in the men's singles event.

Konta is also still in contention for an individual medal as she has progressed into the third round in the women's singles, but she will have a chance to earn mixed doubles glory as well.

Team GB's tennis team leader Iain Bates said: "We are excited nominate two very strong teams for the mixed doubles event here in Rio. The ranking cut off for the event is very high with some of the best players in the world competing here and we expect one team to make the cut.

"Jamie and Johanna will combine excellently to form an extremely competitive doubles team. Johanna is in the form of her career right now and Jamie's doubles record, at world number one and Grand Slam winner, speaks for itself."

Jamie Murray has not progressed past the second round at an Olympic Games.
