Andy Murray criticises US Open setup over rain delays

Andy Murray criticises the US Open's handling of the rain delays.

Andy Murray used his post-match press conference yesterday to bemoan the way the rain delays were handled by the organisers of the US Open.

The Scot beat Donald Young in straight sets to move into the quarter finals, but other things were on his mind after the match.

Persistent rain earlier this week meant that matches were postponed, and players thought that they were rushed back out onto the courts when the rain stopped without proper regard for safety.

"I think because we have the ATP and the ITF and they don’t like each other very much, that there are always going to be some issues with the Davis Cup, the schedule, the Grand Slams and what happened yesterday," said Murray.

"Here we have an ATP tour manager who was in the locker room with us beforehand yesterday and he was saying ‘It’s still raining out there guys, you shouldn’t go out and play’.

"And then the referees here wanted us to go out on the court and if it was at an ATP tournament we wouldn’t have been on the court."

A frustrated Murray now faces a gruelling schedule of back-to-back best-of-five matches to see out the tournament.

"The last few days haven’t been great but there’s nothing we could have done about it at the time," he said.

"Because there’s no covers you’ve just got to try and embrace the situation, do all the right things to get yourself ready if you have to play four matches in four days."

Murray faces John Isner in a quarter-final match later today.
