Marin Cilic has progressed into the third round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows by seeing off Illya Marchenko 7-6(2) 6-2 6-4 in New York.
The first set was a tight affair between the two competitors as neither could find a vital break point to edge ahead in the contest.
A tie-break was needed to decide the opener and it was Cilic who was able to come out on top 7-2 to take the lead.
The Croatian had more luck in the second set as he broke his opponent at the first time of asking, while Marchenko was unable to find the breakthrough himself.
Another break secured a two-set lead for Cilic, who came close to losing his opening service game in the third set following a battling contest, but he was able to save five break points.
Despite his efforts in the previous game, Marchenko relinquished his serve immediately to put him on the back foot against the 25-year-old, who was able to see out the set and the match.
