Jelena Jankovic needed just over an hour to secure her place in the second round at the US Open, beating Bojana Jovanovski 6-2 6-3.
The ninth seed picked up an early break as her Serbian compatriot made a series of double faults at the start of the match.
Jovanovski had the chance to get the break back, but the former world number one made a couple of shots at the net to keep herself ahead before wrapping up the first set.
Jovanovski made a better start to the second, but her opponent brought up a pair of break points midway through the set to give herself the lead again, before serving out the match.
Jankovic will face Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova in her second-round match.
